Oh no!it’s the boring history period again, grumbled the students of class 8th. Why do we have to study something that’s already gone by?

“Sweet dreams”, whispered the students to one another as the history teacher entered the class.

Let me tell you all a story,that happened many years ago, Ms Asha said. Now that’s something new, the students were all ears. Sometime in the 1970s in Reni,Uttarakhand,India, Gaura Devi led 27 of the village women to the site of tree felling and confronted the loggers. When all talking failed, the women resorted to hugging the trees to stop them from being felled.  The women kept an all-night vigil guarding their trees from the cutters until a few of them relented and left the village. And this is the story of Chipko Movement or tree hugging, a non- violent movement to protect trees.

The students were amazed at the bravery of the women to protect nature. They resolved to do bit, would they ever dislike history lessons, I’m afraid not!
