It’s been long

It’s been long,

The egrets aren’t coming,

I know not the reason why,

Rains have ensured lakes are filled up,

It’s been long,

The egrets aren’t coming,

Previously it used to be cattle grazing with egrets hovering around,

Sigh! I had even sighted a purple heron once!

It’s been long,

The egrets aren’t coming,

I’d be happy if they’ve found a food source elsewhere: though they are missed here,

But I’d be plenty unhappy if it’s the sound of construction happening all around that’s disturbing them?

It’s been long,

The egrets aren’t coming,

Disturbed as a mother hen waiting for her brood to get back home,

Hopeful is all that I can be until my beloved egrets come back home!

  1. I always get excited by the big birds – the herons are sometimes seen in the plowed fields but mostly in the little lakes and ponds… but they are disappearing tis true!

  2. Ah, this is lovely and very poignant. The repeated lines really work to underline the narrator’s feelings about their absence. It is very noticeable when birds leave an area – and egrets and herons are so lovely.

  3. The earth grief so many of us feel is explicable to the mind but not the heart — there are reasons (and often distant ones) the egrets do not show, but absence wallows deeper down. Well done –
