‘Tis the holiday season,
Families gather,
friends meet,
gifts exchanged,
decorated egos-
slyly wrapped;
beneath rosy ribbons,
Squabbles peak,
Money rules,
Sentiments lost,
Relationships broken,
Open me,
Checkmate,
‘Tis the holiday season.

P.S :- This poem is inspired from a news clipping I happened to read about relationships being broken around the holiday season. Fights usually revolve around whose gift is more pricer. It’s sad to note that emotions and relationships take a backseat and money rules.

Great, thought provoking poem Kitty. Sometimes we, humans become so petty and small minded. Thanks for joining in.

Kitty I can relate as I have one son who has to compare and keep a tally of what his brother gets. It makes gifting him anything an exercise in arithmetic and balancing a spreadsheet of purchases making sure the total is dead even. The last time he complained (he was about 16) I showed him my gift list and told him that if he wanted things even he owed his brother 7 cents – to make it equal! He’s never complained to me since but he still keeps count (now he’s 34). Your poem is an accurate description in so many ways!

This is such a sad poem. Itβs even worse that its meaning is seated in truth and modern behavior. My husband and I didnβt exchange bought gifts. I made his favourite Greek lamb meal ( a seven hour labor of live) and we went in a short break to my favourite game farm.

That’s a beautiful gesture from the both of you. Intentions matter, not the price of the gifts. Thank you for stopping by. π
